The science of photobiomodulation

Light. Cells.
A different way to support comfort.

Cold laser therapy is studied for canine mobility and rehabilitation. Here's what the research says, how the light interacts with tissue, and where Eixio fits.

Small signals. Cellular responses.

What happens when light meets living tissue?

Photobiomodulation (PBM) uses selected red and near-infrared light to influence cellular signalling. A leading proposed mechanism involves mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, changes in nitric oxide signalling and ATP production.

Researchers also study downstream effects on inflammation and circulation. Responses depend on wavelength, dose, tissue and the condition being treated. PBM is not a guaranteed outcome or a replacement for a diagnosis.

Light is absorbed.

Some incident photons are scattered or absorbed before reaching the intended area. Coat, pigment and technique affect transmission.

Cells receive a signal.

Absorbed light can influence mitochondrial and other signalling pathways. More energy is not automatically a better biological dose.

A response is measured.

Veterinary studies measure pain, weight bearing, mobility and recovery. Different outcomes do not always improve together.

Not just a promise.

These studies investigate PBM using other devices and protocols. They are not clinical trials of Eixio and do not establish Eixio-specific results.

01 · Canine osteoarthritis

Comfort & lameness in dogs with OA

A randomized, blinded study of 20 dogs compared PBM with sham treatment over six weeks. Nine of 11 PBM-treated dogs reduced NSAID use, compared with none of nine sham-treated dogs. Pain and lameness outcomes also improved.

02 · Post-CCL surgery

Weight bearing after TPLO surgery

In a randomized study of 27 dogs undergoing TPLO, pre-operative laser treatment was associated with improved peak vertical force at eight weeks. Bone-healing measures did not show a significant difference.

03 · Light transmission

Why coat and technique matter

A 47-dog study investigated how laser settings and the coat affect transmitted light. Wavelength, power, coat pigmentation and shaving influenced transmission. Coat length alone did not predict it.

Optical transmission does not by itself prove clinical benefit.

04 · Equine tendon & ligament

Laser therapy alongside rehabilitation

A 26-horse study compared high-intensity laser plus rehabilitation with rehabilitation alone for tendon or ligament injury. It reported improvements in pain, swelling, lameness and lesion-area measures.

Three wavelengths.
Different optical interactions.

Eixio combines visible red light with two near-infrared bands. The diagram maps optical roles, not measured penetration depths. No wavelength is guaranteed to reach a specific joint.

650nm · 16 diodes · 80mW

Visible red light with relatively surface-weighted absorption. It also gives a visible cue of where the treatment head is directed.

808nm · 5 diodes · 1000mW

A near-infrared band used in PBM research involving soft tissue and musculoskeletal conditions. Actual delivery depends on tissue and technique.

980nm · 4 diodes · 800mW

Near-infrared light with stronger water absorption than 808nm. This does not mean it always penetrates farther; monitor warmth and follow the manual.

1880mW is the sum of listed diode outputs, not a measurement of energy delivered to a hip or joint.
